Neptun Wave Spring: Lenovo ThinkPad Line-Up

Lenovo Neptun Intel Hardware

Our lineup of Lenovo ThinkPads for the next Neptun Wave will comprise some new devices, some different configurations, and some lower prices. This article will give you an overview of what can be expected. We will publish detailed specifications of all devices in early February, and all prices shortly before the Wave starts on February 11 at noon.

ThinkPad P1 & ThinkPad P52

The new ThinkPad P1 is now our high-end Intel Xeon workstation with ECC RAM for exceptional stability and reliability. The P1, which is the professional version of the X1 Extreme, offers the same components as our P52 from last Fall with 1 kg less weight. Despite the low weight, the P1 is still able to keep all components cool, as our internal tests have shown. The P1 also sports the same color-accurate, touch-enabled 4k display as the P52.

The ThinkPad P52 now comes with a high-end hexacore Intel i7 CPU with non-ECC RAM, which has enabled us to equip it with an Nvidia Quadro P3200 instead of the P2000 in our previous configuration. Depending on the application, this GPU upgrade can give you about 50 – 100% more graphics performance depending on the application, while the switch from the Xeon to the i7 will mean less than 5% lower performance for most calculations. Memory upgrades will be possible at a lower cost, since non-ECC RAM can be used.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon & ThinkPad T480s

In our new lineup, the venerable T480s will be replaced entirely by the T480 and our new configuration of the X1 Carbon 6th. The X1 Carbon will come in a very similar configuration as our T480s from last Fall, but at the same price it will offer better battery life, lower weight, and better performance (due to better thermal management). Additionally, the X1 Carbon has two full-speed (40 Gbit/s) Thunderbolt 3 ports (T480s only 20 Gbit/s), which enables easy and powerful extensions of its capabilities.

The T480, on the other hand, will once more offer better upgradeability and similar performance at a lower price compared to the T480s. The dedicated GPU and the battery that can be exchanged while the system is running make the T480 ideal for a wide variety of use cases. Naturally, all docking solutions for the T480s are also compatible with the T480.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th High-end

In addition to the regular X1 Carbon 6th, we will also offer a high-end configuration of the popular device with the fastest available i7-CPU with vPro, twice as much storage (1 TB), and LTE connectivity as standard. To match the high-end components, this version of the X1 Carbon will come with the 500 nit HDR display (glossy!), which offers excellent color accuracy for content creation.

ThinkPad L390 Yoga

The L380 from last fall will be replaced by the brand-new L390 Yoga. With twice the disk space as the L380, and with the same integrated pen functionality as other ThinkPad Yogas, the L390 Yoga brings high-end features to our most affordable device. Additionally, the upgrade from the Intel Kaby Lake Refresh CPU to a Whiskey Lake model will give you a slight upgrade in performance.

The rest of our ThinkPad lineup

The X1 Yoga 3rd, X380 Yoga, T480 will all be available in the same configurations as last fall, but the prices will be lower for all three devices. As always, all Neptun ThinkPads will come with a three-year on-site warranty that covers your device internationally, which are optionally upgradeable to up to 5 years so you will be able to count on your machine wherever you are.
